Appreciating Joy

Ruth Davidar Paul   |   January 8, 2019

Here we are. Another new year. Another twelve months. As I grow older, the years seem to be rushing by. This new year already seems pregnant with life-changing moments (pun definitely intended!). As I stand at the threshold, contemplating all that life will throw at me in the coming year, I pause and remember the word I’ve received for 2019.

Joy.

When I think of joy, I’ve always associated it with being unfathomable, steadfast, and in-transient. Joy is so much more than mere happiness. It’s a gladness of spirit that has nothing to do with circumstances.

C. S. Lewis once said, ‘Joy is the serious business of heaven’.

As a brand new year stands welcoming me, inviting me to learn more about this joy, my hope is that it will overflow and permeate everything in my life, regardless of what I might be experiencing.

As I consider the future, I know there are no guarantees this side of eternity. But I know the One who is already there ahead, leading the way. So I rejoice in anticipation.
