The weight of responsibilities.
The burden of expectations.
The demands of roles.
The ache of shelved dreams.
The stagnancy of uncertainty.
The drift of confusion.
The past couple of weeks have been wearying. Some days, I waltz through untethered by that ominous anxiety. But then there are other days when it all comes crashing down. Before I know it, I find myself tumbling into that familiar rabbit hole of despair and endless worry.
Yet even in that swirl of exhaustion and tangled thoughts—through the knots of why nots and what now—a verse I’ve read, quoted, and prayed countless times comes alive:
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose trust is the Lord.”Jeremiah 17:7
We are constantly urged to place our trust in the shifting sands of careers, financial freedom, prudent plans, reliable relationships, and even our own frail strength. These may appear to be solid foundations, yet when the winds of change bellow and the storms of life strike, we discover how fragile they truly are.
But in the haze of uncertainty, Jeremiah’s words remind us of a truth that doesn’t change, even as everything else is unsteady. There is a steadfast foundation we can rely on—the Lord Himself. This verse doesn’t just call us to trust in God; it urges us to make God Himself our trust.
It’s interesting that Jeremiah doesn’t just say, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,” but adds with absolute confidence, “whose trust is the Lord.” There’s a quiet but powerful shift in faith here. It’s not only about placing our confidence in what God can do, but anchoring our hearts in who He is. That difference changes everything. There is a sure foundation, a steadfast one that does not crumble when everything else sways.
When our trust is in the Lord, our confidence rests not only in what He can do, but in who He is. Yahweh. The Great I AM. Adonai. El Shaddai. Jehovah.Promise Keeper. Lion of Judah. Prince of Peace. Covenant Maker. Immanuel. Abba. Comforter. Counsellor. Provider. Healer. Life Giver.
As our eyes are truly opened to see and comprehend the One in whom we anchor our lives, we begin to realise that we are indeed blessed—not only to trust Him, but to have Him as our very trust.
I am sure that there are seasons in life that we feel the heat on several fronts, our souls are parched, our inner beings are dry, and our faith is withered. Yet, the following verse in Jeremiah gives us much hope:
“He is like a tree planted by the water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and it is not anxious in the year of drought.” Jeremiah 17:8
Picture a tree sprouting green leaves, flourishing under the relentless sun. Though everything around it seems parched and dried up, its life’s secret is in its roots reaching deep into a source that never fails.
That, my dear friends, is what trust in the Lord looks like and having Him as our trust looks like. No matter what the landscape looks like, the stream of Living Waters continues to flow. In spite of everything. Despite everything. We are called to let our roots deep down and drink deeply from that never-ending source. That is our assurance that we will not wither away.
It might still be scorching on the outside. Nothing may seem to have changed. But as we draw from the life-giving water, we realise we are no longer parched anymore. The outward aridness gives way to an inward lushness that transforms our very beings.
As this truth takes root in my heart, I am beginning to realise that my circumstances do not need to be perfect. What truly matters is being rooted in Him—drawing strength, peace, and life from His unchanging presence and from who He is.
Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, and whose trust is the Lord.
