Walls around the heart keep people out,
Our true self is hidden within.
We seek to protect ourselves from pain,
We wear a mask, an image to maintain.
Walls around the heart keep love out,
The opportunity for joy is lost.
We don't allow others to draw near,
We hide behind thick walls of fear.
Walls around the heart forbid us to hope,
Disappointment is too scary to bear.
We dare not imagine a future bright,
We keep broken dreams out of sight.
Walls around the heart keep us safe,
From further heartbreak and pain.
We avoid the risk of deep connection,
We fear more agony and rejection.
Walls around the heart God can break down,
His tenderness penetrates through.
The God of love is pursuing our heart,
Freedom from the walls only He can impart.
When the walls are gone, we are set free,
To be all that God created us to be.
Authentic love we can freely share,
This we experience when God draws near.
