Before writing this post, I went through my mental list of all the places I have visited in the world. While there have been many beautiful places that I’ve visited with many breathtaking views, none of them was more simple yet exquisite and breathtaking than my first glimpse of Cabo da Rama beach in Goa.
We went on a family vacation to Goa in January 2022. We had an agenda. We were checking off a list of activities to do with the kids and places to visit as a family. We were staying at the Benaulim beach and we had planned to visit a place called the Cabo da Rama fort. The kids were not at all happy that it was going to be a one-and-a-half-hour ride. They were extremely tired and irritated after we got there. They were even more irritated when we told them we had to climb up to see the fort. Also doing this trek in the middle of the day didn’t help anyone one bit.
Amidst a lot of grumbling and muttering and maybe even a few stray tears we climbed to the top. And then almost at once the kids' expression changed from that of irritation to that of pure joy, unfettered joy and delight. They saw the beach below and told us that they wanted to go there. What caught our attention was the clear turquoise blue waters and the clean sand and the fact that it was practically empty.
So we trekked down to this beautiful beach that we had stumbled upon. It was not a part of our plan. It was not on the agenda. But it was the place we enjoyed the most. So much so that the kids asked us to take them back the next day. The next day was my husband’s birthday and he celebrated a quiet birthday at the beach, overlooking the beautiful blue expanse of water, the calm lapping of the waves, clear blue skies, little white clouds and sand between our toes.
The place is really quite empty during the day. Unlike other beaches in Goa that have shacks all along the coast, this beach has one tiny shack to its name. They have some basic juice and bottled water and a restroom. We had got one of those giant beach umbrellas, from the city for shade. And whoever wanted to rest in the shade would take a little snooze and then head back to play in the water or build sand castles. Around 4:30 or 5 pm in the evening, we saw people dotting the coast. Cabo da Rama is known for its picturesque sunsets. So we saw a lot of people getting their pictures for Instagram. If you want to skip that crowd, you can go during the day, enjoy a good swim and snooze and head out just when the crowd starts coming in.
The easiest way to get there is by cab. You can rent one of those self driven vehicles or book a cab with a driver. Alternatively you can rent a scooty too for a more adventurous ride. The approach to the place might not be all that great. But the view is totally worth it.
